Historically, these islands have also been referred to as the South Sea Islands.

Hokule’a (accompanied by its solar-powered sister canoe, Hikianalia, for much of the voyage) covered 40,300 nautical miles, visiting 150 ports, and 23 countries and territories, according to the official website.

“Malama Honua” translates to “To care for our Earth,” and the voyage was meant to promote unity among people, as well as “to join and grow the global movement toward a more sustainable world.” Crowds spill into water amongst the canoes of ʻOhana Waʻa, an amazing sight that will go down in the history books…

The term Polynesia was first used in 1756 by French writer Charles de Brosses, and originally applied to all the islands of the Pacific.

In 1831, Jules Dumont d'Urville proposed a restriction on its use during a lecture to the Geographical Society of Paris.

The wahine (women), both experienced voyagers, were chosen to lead the canoe on the final leg of its long journey, sailing from Tahiti to Oahu.

They were greeted by thousands of people, over a hundred canoes, and a traditional welcoming ceremony that had not been performed in public in 200 years.

Practically everyone living in Hawaii knows how to surf, but with so many beaches and such awesome weather that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
