Anyone who’s been in a serious long-term relationship knows the journey isn’t without certain challenges, and when you’re dating an older man—we’re talking a decade or more—things can get even trickier.

I know this firsthand, as I’m 25 years old, and I’ve been dating an older guy nearly 15 years my senior for almost four years.

And I've added a couple of my own tips for good measure, since I am the younger woman and all. DON' T point out how "cute" his first grey chest hair is (OOPS).

But I've been watching and compiled a list of DOs and DON' Ts from Jess's experience dating the sophisticated Dermot Mulroney as Fancypants, who's a whopping twelve years older.

But that’s not a power position, and it does you no favors. Beware of wielding stereotypes; they’re cheap shortcuts masquerading as wisdom, and if you use them, prepare to be judged by them. You would only applaud someone if she succeeded in doing something impossible or crazy, or if she got away with something she shouldn’t have. The cougar image is cartoonish at best, derived either from a culture fearful of a sexually empowered woman, or from the woman herself, who claims cougardom as a way to boost her self esteem via sex with a man many years her junior.

When it came to finding love in New York, Amber Soletti, a 42-year-old who lives in the West Village, had no luck dating older guys or men her own age.

While they were “well-established and articulate,” she wasn’t physically attracted to them and found they had too many issues.

So, six years ago, she started dating studs in their 20s and 30s — and she hasn’t looked back.
